Als Biologin und Wissenschaftsjournalistin konzentriere ich mich bei meinen Naturschutzprojekten auf die visuelle Dokumentation von Initiativen zum Schutz von Wildtieren und der Auswirkungen menschlicher Aktivit\u00e4ten auf \u00d6kosysteme. Dazu geh\u00f6ren Themen wie die Rettung und Rehabilitierung von Wildtieren in Griechenland, die Herausforderungen des Whale Watching in Norwegen, die Erforschung gef\u00e4hrdeter Schweinswale und die Bek\u00e4mpfung der Plastikverschmutzung im Meer. Messengers of the Sea<\/a><\/h3>
Bis heute ist der Schweinswal ein R\u00e4tsel, denn es ist \u00e4u\u00dferst schwierig, ihn in freier Wildbahn zu erforschen. Dabei ist es heute wichtiger denn je, diesen Kleinwal zu verstehen. Seit 2020 wird der Schweinswal in der deutschen Roten Liste als \u201estark gef\u00e4hrdet\u201c gef\u00fchrt, und es kommt immer wieder zu Strandungen an den europ\u00e4ischen K\u00fcsten. Aus diesem Grund hat sich ein Netzwerk von Instituten in den Niederlanden, D\u00e4nemark und Deutschland zusammengeschlossen, um die einzige in der Nord- und Ostsee lebende Walart zu erfassen, zu erhalten und zu sch\u00fctzen. Dieses Projekt taucht in die Arbeit dieser Institute ein und zeigt, dass auch auf den ersten Blick unbedeutende Arten einen wertvollen Beitrag f\u00fcr unsere Meere leisten und sch\u00fctzenswert sind.<\/div>

\"Northern<\/span><\/a><\/div>

Nisten in Plastik<\/a><\/h3>
Die abgelegene Insel Helgoland ist der einzige Lebensraum f\u00fcr Basst\u00f6lpel in Deutschland. Seit 1991 ist sie ein Zufluchtsort f\u00fcr bis zu 8.000 Brutpaare, die jedes Jahr zu den Klippen zur\u00fcckkehren, um ein einziges K\u00fcken aufzuziehen. Die Verschmutzung der Meere durch Plastik stellt jedoch ein zunehmendes Problem dar. Die V\u00f6gel verwechseln das Plastik im Meer mit Algen und bauen B\u00e4nder aus Fischernetzen in ihre Nester ein. Dies f\u00fchrt dazu, dass t\u00e4glich etwa 14 V\u00f6gel an den Klippen durch Verheddern und Strangulieren umkommen. Es wird gesch\u00e4tzt, dass heute 98% der Basst\u00f6lpelnester Plastikm\u00fcll enthalten. Diese Geschichte zeigt den Kontrast zwischen der Sch\u00f6nheit und der Trag\u00f6die dieser Seev\u00f6gel und untersucht gleichzeitig die wissenschaftliche Forschung und m\u00f6gliche L\u00f6sungen f\u00fcr das kritische Plastikproblem im Meer.<\/div>

Rettung der Papageientaucher in Island<\/a><\/h3>
Papageientaucher sind ein nationaler Schatz in Island, das die gr\u00f6\u00dfte Kolonie der Welt hat. Doch seit Jahrzehnten nehmen ihre Best\u00e4nde ab. Neben dem Mangel an Sandaalen tragen auch der Klimawandel und die sich abzeichnende Vogelgrippe zu einer weiteren Belastung bei. Besonders Jungv\u00f6gel sind anf\u00e4llig f\u00fcr anthropogene Bedrohungen. Die Lichtverschmutzung kann die Papageientaucher verwirren, so dass sie ins Landesinnere fliegen, anstatt aufs Meer hinaus. Mit Hilfe von B\u00fcrgerwissenschaftlern und engagierten Einheimischen ist der Sea Life Trust auf der Insel Heimaey die einzige Organisation im Land, die die jungen Seev\u00f6gel rettet und rehabilitiert. Neben ihrer T\u00e4tigkeit arbeiten die Wissenschaftler des South Iceland Research Center mit den Tierrettern zusammen, um Daten \u00fcber die Papageientaucher zu sammeln und Strategien zur Erhaltung der Population zu entwickeln.<\/div>

Die Zukunft des Whale Watching<\/a><\/h3>
Die Walbeobachtung hat sich in Norwegen zu einem boomenden Wirtschaftszweig entwickelt, der die schwindenden Traditionen der Waljagd abgel\u00f6st hat. Die Zunahme der Touren hat jedoch eine Reihe neuer Herausforderungen f\u00fcr die Wale mit sich gebracht, darunter Unterwasserl\u00e4rm und St\u00f6rungen durch Schiffe, die ihren F\u00fctterungs- und Bruterfolg zunehmend bedrohen. Unter dem Begriff \u201eSilent Whale Watching\u201c erforscht ein Anbieter von Walbeobachtungstouren Hybridschiffstechnologien als nachhaltige Walbeobachtungsalternative, die darauf abzielt, die St\u00f6rung der Meeress\u00e4uger zu reduzieren. Dabei wird ein Elektromotor eingesetzt, wenn man sich den Walen auf See n\u00e4hert, und es gibt ein von Meeresbiologen geleitetes Bildungsprogramm an Bord. Diese Geschichte erforscht alternative L\u00f6sungen, um die komplexe \u00dcberschneidung von Tourismus und Naturschutz zu l\u00f6sen.<\/div>

Action for Wildlife<\/a><\/h3>
Action for Wildlife mit Sitz in Sindos ist die einzige NGO, die sich auf die Rettung und Rehabilitierung von Wildtieren in Nordgriechenland spezialisiert hat. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Hellenic Wildlife Hospital, dem ersten Wildtierkrankenhaus auf dem Balkan, werden unter anderem Schildkr\u00f6ten, Igel, Seev\u00f6gel, Schakale und Greifv\u00f6gel behandelt. Der Konflikt zwischen Mensch und Wildtier ist ein h\u00e4ufiger Grund daf\u00fcr, dass Wildtiere in das Zentrum gebracht werden. Zu diesen Konflikten geh\u00f6ren Umweltverschmutzung, Lebensraumverlust, Jagd, Vergiftung, Fallenstellen und Zusammenst\u00f6\u00dfe mit Fahrzeugen. Gemeinsam mit den Tierpflegern arbeitet die Tier\u00e4rztin Sophia Prousali unerm\u00fcdlich daran, die verletzten Tiere zu rehabilitieren. Trotz einer \u00dcberlebensrate von durchschnittlich 30 % stellt sie fest, dass \u201ejedes Leben wichtig ist und die Aufnahme eines Dialogs zwischen Mensch und Natur dazu beitragen kann, diesen Tieren in Zukunft zu helfen\u201c.<\/div>

\"Ghost-net<\/span><\/a><\/div>

Geisternetz Bergung auf R\u00fcgen<\/a><\/h3>
Geisternetze sind aufgegebene, verlorene oder weggeworfene Fischernetze, die weiterhin in den Ozeanen schwimmen und eine erhebliche Bedrohung f\u00fcr das Leben im Meer und die \u00d6kosysteme darstellen. Sie k\u00f6nnen sich in einer Vielzahl von Meerestieren verfangen, was zu Verletzungen, Erstickung und Tod f\u00fchren kann. Um den st\u00e4ndigen Beifang von Wildtieren zu verhindern, koordiniert die Gesellschaft zur Rettung der Delphine mehrmals im Jahr komplexe Geisternetzbergungsaktionen auf der deutschen Insel R\u00fcgen. Dabei tauchen Teams von Sporttauchern bis zu 30 Meter tief in das dunkle, kalte und tr\u00fcbe Meereswasser hinab, um Lufts\u00e4cke an den Geisternetzen zu befestigen. Die Lufts\u00e4cke werden dann aufgeblasen, so dass das Netz sicher an die Oberfl\u00e4che schwimmen kann, wo es auf ein Fischereifahrzeug gezogen und sp\u00e4ter entsorgt wird.<\/div>
