During research on gray and harbor seal teeth from the Baltic Sea, Linnea Cervin of the Swedish Museum of Natural History observed that several specimens had additional cusps atypical of either species. This unexpected finding prompted a research project into possible hybridization between the two species in the region. Hybridization between gray and harbor seals has been documented before. One example is Gaia, who was born at the Fisheries and Maritime Museum in Denmark to a gray seal mother and a harbor seal father. The occurrence of hybridization in the wild, however, remains poorly understood. Identifying wild hybrids could provide valuable insights into seal population dynamics and carry important implications for conservation and management across the Baltic Sea.
